It was during the time when drinking flavored 151 shots & LCs were in style. We met in our early twenties though it wasn’t in person. I was online chatting away under an alias of a screen name with some good friends. I got lured into a “chat room” filled with a group of mutual friends. (Do you remember what those are?!? CHATROOMS!) We all chatted away and I met some nice people. This continued and one day I received a private message from Mr. HMK and the conversation went something like this:
Mr. HMK: Hi Ms.Lovely, how are you doing today?
Ms. Lovely: Im FiNe. HoW R YoU? WhY R YoU PRiVaTe MeSSaGiNG Me?!?
Mr. HMK: *pause* Just to say HI.
Ms. Lovely: Ok, HI. BaCk tO tHe ChaTRooM!
Mr. HMK: Wait…we’re heading out to get some drinks, would you like to join us?
Ms. Lovely: Um, No THaNKs. HaVe FuN!
That conversation ended but similar ones came up sporadically in the coming months and received the same answer. Hard to get? Me thinks not.
Then came one day when Mr. HMK asked if I’d like to come out and play some games at a nearby gaming area. I told Mr. HMK that I wasn’t interested in going or meeting anyone. Our conversation ended and we both signed offline. However, I knew that at this point in my life I really needed to get out and just be social – I quickly changed and brushed my hair then headed out to the gaming area. We met, we talked, we played games and I came home with some stuff animals. I didn’t think anything of it.
The next time we saw each other was when a mutual friend asked if I’d like to join her at the beach boardwalk. I agree and long and behold who shows up to pick me up? Mr. HMK! Me thinks: What’s going on here? It turns out we were going on some sort of date. A.GROUP.DATE. We all went, we talked, we played games went on some rides. I didn’t think anything of it.
This theme continued as years flew by. We went, we talked, we ate, we played games and we would have a good time. What is happening? Mr. HMK and I move out together. We bake cupcakes, grill steaks and make potato salad together. We remodel a house together. We move into a home together. He somewhat kneels down on one knee and asks me in a rhetorical way to be his wife. With my ugly cry face I say yes, and then we frolic on the beach! Kismet.
We will be married in San Jose, CA nearly a decade after we met. It’s about time!
It pays to be persistent. Well done Tony!
